Frequently Asked Questions
What is MSM? Methylsulfonylmethane, better known as MSM, is a naturally occurring compound found in plants, animals and humans. MSM supplies amino acids, the building blocks of proteins, with sulfur, the third most abundant mineral in the body. Sulfur is essential for the healthy formation and repair of connective tissue like cartilage, collagen and keratin.
MSM is an important nutrient for the maintenance of healthy joints, tendons, ligaments and other connective tissue. It aids the immune system via supporting a healthy inflammatory response and is essential to glutathione production, a key antioxidant in the body. Sufficient glutathione levels are vital for a healthy, functioning immune system.
MSM is known as the "beauty mineral" because it helps keep hair, skin and nails healthy and strong by boosting the production of collagen and keratin. MSM also supplies hair follicles with sulfur, an ingredient vital to the production of cysteine and methionine, sulfur dependent amino acids in hair responsible for its strength, texture and resilience. Some speculate that MSM may help boost growth by extending the growing phase of hair.
MSM is a popular ingredient in hair and nail growth, skin care and joint health supplements because of these reasons but is also highly effective when used alone. MSM and Vitamin C may work synergistically to enhance the bioavailability of each for optimal results. Our MSM products deliver concentrated, therapeutic doses to help support:

Is it safe to take MSM if you have an allergy to sulfa drugs? Yes. There have been no verifiable cases of an allergic reaction to MSM including through pathways similar to sulfa-drugs. Although both contain sulfur, that is where their similarities end. Sulfa-drugs contain a chemical group called sulfonamide, which generally are the cause of allergic reactions as they metabolize, and specific side chains are released. The allergy-causing compounds bear no resemblance structurally or functionally to MSM. However, if you have a medical condition or take medication, always consult with a qualified health care professional before using any vitamin or supplement.
Does MSM have side effects? MSM is considered safe and is generally well tolerated with minimal side effects. However, a small number of people may experience mild gastrointestinal discomfort. To mitigate this, start out with a quarter or half of the recommended daily dose during the first couple of days and gradually work your way up to the full dose as your body adjusts. If you are on blood thinners, you should not take MSM. As with any vitamin or supplement, if you have or suspect that you have a medical condition or take medication, always consult with a qualified health care professional before using.
Twig & Leaf products contain OptiMSM which is the only brand of MSM on the market today that has (GRAS) designation by the FDA.
